Alvin Schubert, 81

Alvin C. Schubert, 81 years, of Sherwood, passed away Wednesday, May 29, 2013 at Community Health Professionals Inpatient Hospice, Defiance.  Alvin was born September 24, 1931 in Continental, Ohio, to the late Bert and Edna (Durham) Schubert.  He was a 1949 graduate of Oakwood High School.  He then attended Defiance College. Alvin was an Army veteran serving in the Korean Conflict.  He married E. Allene Osmon on November 7, 1953 in Defiance, and she preceded him in death on February 20, 2010.  Alvin was employed by General Motors Central Foundry, Defiance for 25 years, retiring in 1996.  He had also worked as a Manager for Landmark in Sherwood.  He was an active member of the Sherwood United Methodist Church where served on church council, taught Sunday School, sang in the church choir and served as Sunday School Superintendent.  Wintering in Mount Dora, Florida, Alvin was also active at the First Presbyterian Church of Mount Dora where he served on many committees also.  He was a life member of the Sherwood VFW Post #5665, the Sherwood Masonic Lodge #620 F. & A.M.  Alvin served the Sherwood community in many different capacities such as City Council member, a fireman for the Sherwood Volunteer Fire Department, a Hospice Volunteer as well as a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and the Sherwood Circle Club (Park Board).  He also was one of the founders of Boy Scout Troop #139.  He also ran ambulance for the former Greenisen-Tilton Funeral Home for many years.

Surviving are his three children, Eugene “Gene” (Barbara) Schubert of Ney, Fred (Cathie) Schubert of Sherwood and Kathleen (Ronald) Cline of Mark Center; daughter-in-law, Fran Schubert of Broomfield, Colorado; nine grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren; one sister, Eunice Brooks of North Creek, Ohio; one brother-in-law, Harold Osmon of Defiance.  He was preceded in death by his wife, E. Allene, one son, Paul Michael Schubert, four brothers, Virgil, Lester, Wilbur and Harold Schubert and three sisters, Dorothy Rejiester, Mary Schafer and Martha Schubert.

Funeral services for Alvin C. Schubert will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, June 3, 2013 in the Sherwood United Methodist Church, 512 North Harrison Street, Sherwood with Pastor Kevin Doseck officiating.  Interment will follow in Riverview Memory Gardens, rural Defiance.  The family will receive relatives and friends on Sunday, June 2, 2013 from 2:00 – 8:00 p.m. in the Oberlin-Turnbull Funeral Home, 230 East Elm Street, Sherwood, where the Sherwood Masonic Lodge #620 F. & A.M. will conduct services at 7:00 p.m. followed by the Sherwood VFW Post #5665 at 7:15 p.m. Sunday evening.  Friends will also be received one hour prior to the service on Monday at the church.
