Doris Callender Flowers, 94

Doris Callender Flowers, age 94, passed to her eternal home on Wednesday, February 3, 2016, in Hicksville, Ohio, where she had been a resident of Hickory Creek of Hicksville.

She was born on August 18, 1921, to Glen E. and Vesta (Brown) Callender in Edgerton, Ohio. She was a 1939 graduate of Edgerton High School. She married Milton J. Flowers on February 10, 1944, in Phoenix, Arizona, and he preceded her in death in 1990.

Survivors include her daughter, Christine Flowers Smith, of Edgerton; a grandson, Alexander Smith, of Auckland, New Zealand; a granddaughter, Claire (Brian) Rogers, of Maineville, Ohio; two great-grandchildren, Ava and Levi Rogers; a sister, Gwenn (Keith) Mullendore, of Snow Lake, Indiana; 16 nieces and nephews; 30 great- and many great-great-nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Flowers was preceded in death by her parents, a son-in-law, James B. Smith, and two brothers, Melvin (Kelly) Callender and Allen (Dutch) Callender.

She often recalled helping with the family business, Callender’s Dairy, when she was a child. She used a wagon to deliver butter to customers’ homes in Edgerton.

Mrs. Flowers enjoyed watching baseball on TV, especially the Cincinnati Reds. She loved her family, especially her grandchildren, and spent three months helping care for her nine-month-old grandson while her daughter was seriously ill. She was an expert seamstress and made her daughter’s wedding gown. She enjoyed all kinds of crafts, especially crocheting afghans for family members. She was a past president of the Edgerton Friends of the Library and was a Brownie troop leader and a 4-H advisor.

In accordance with her wishes no formal services are planned. Gifts made be given to the Williams County EMS.
