Terry Fay Youse, 79

FAAAN…TASTIC! For years, anyone who knew Terry would hear that reply when they asked how he was doing. Terry enjoyed rabbit and squirrel hunting, and fishing. He started deer hunting and bagged his first deer at age 70. He took several trips to Canada to fish in the fall and to ice fish in the winter. He especially enjoyed hunting and fishing with his son, Troy. There was 1 trip to Canada that included his son, Troy, as well as his sons-in-law, Alan and Roy.

Terry spent countless hours in the shop in his barn tinkering and making numerous lawn decorations. For many years he and his wife, Mary Ann, proudly displayed the Christmas collection Terry made on the front lawn of their home on US 20. Many of those items were donated to the Montpelier Olde Tyme Holiday Gathering and can now be seen at the Williams County fairgrounds at Christmas time. Each of his children has an angel and deer that he made, among other items.

He also enjoyed restoring a 1942 Allis Chalmers B which he drove in the Kunkle 4th of July, the Pioneer, and the Montpelier Bean Days parades. And he liked military memorabilia. In the mid-1970s Terry purchased a 1943 cannon that used to sit at a park in Fayette. He made some repairs and brought it to his home in Pioneer. When the family moved from Pioneer to rural Montpelier in 1979, the cannon came with and served as a landmark for many years. Terry had been approached to sell the cannon more than once and when he decided to part ways with it, the agreement with the buyer included Terry driving an Army tank as part of the payment. He enjoyed that ride more than words can describe.

In his youth Terry was a Boy Scout and he was a Boy Scout Leader when he first got married and again when his son was in scouting. Terry and Mary Ann were very supportive of their children and spent many hours at sporting events while they were growing up. When the grandkids came along, they would come to each of their childrens’ homes one night a week to enjoy getting to know them. A tradition which will survive his death.

Going to tractor shows and flea markets with his friend, Mike Allen, and spending many hours at Rowe’s Recreation in Montpelier were some of Terry’s favorite retirement activities.

Terry was born in Wauseon, Ohio to Charles A. and Genevieve H. (Hillard) Youse. He graduated from Montpelier High School in 1955 and served in the U.S. Army in Seattle, WA in 1956 and 1957 as part of Missile Defense following the Korean War during the early years of the Cold War. Terry married Mary Ann McNutt on June 13, 1964 in Toledo and she survives. He worked for Owen’s Electric as a refrigerator repairman and also for Zulch TV & Appliance before beginning his 40 year tenure at Chase Brass & Copper Company in 1967. He worked in the maintenance department at Chase for many years and ended his career there as a machinist, retiring in 2007. He was known as “Bunk” by his friends at Chase.

Terry is survived by his wife of nearly 53 years, Mary Ann (McNutt) Youse, as well as his 3 children, 7 grandchildren, and 1 great granddaughter. His children are Dawn and Alan Cogswell of Montpelier, Troy and Lisa Youse of Wauseon, and Hope and Roy McKelvey of Montpelier. His grandchildren include MyKenzie Fast of Pioneer, Logan McKelvey of Montpelier, Bree Youse of Wauseon, Reese Cogswell of Philadelphia, PA, Landri McKelvey of Montpelier, Jess Youse of Wauseon, and Layne Cogswell of Montpelier. His great granddaughter is Addisyn Ruth Fast of Pioneer. Terry is also survived by his sister, Jacque (Youse) Whetro of Winterhaven, FL, sister-in-law Marsha (McNutt) Handrich (Will) of Dover, OH, brother-in-law David McNutt (Susette) of Toledo, niece Suzette Whetro of Toledo, nephew Meric Whetro (Amy) of Delaware, Ohio, and uncle Dudley Hillard (Nancy) of Montpelier. Preceding Terry in death were his parents, brother-in-law Ronald Whetro, sisters-in-law Paula (Hayes) Bridgman, Linda McNutt, and Judy (McNutt) Young, in-laws Francis “Mac” and Helen McNutt, and good friend Tom “Wick” Wickerham.

There will be no services or visitation. A private interment will take place at Riverside Cemetery in Montpelier at a later date with Military graveside rites provided by the Montpelier Veterans.
